These days our computers are plagued with all types of threats. One of the more common is a search redirecting malware. These annoyances will make you feel like picking up your computer and throwing it out of the window. But, don't! There is a solution.

What is Malware?

Malware, also known as malicious software, is software designed to intrude into your computer and contaminate it with adware, spyware, Trojan horses, worms, rootkits and computer viruses. This list could go on for days. This is why this problem is so prevalent. So many of these web addresses appear innocent, but couldn't be further from it. In most cases, these web addresses send you to a group of paid to promote or ad sites that the creators of these malwares make profits from. These are not nearly as harmful as other malicious software's, but are a huge annoyance.

What Can Be Done To Remove Them?

There are two options: manually removal or automated removal. Both options can be performed yourself with the automated being the safest. When trying to remove these yourself, there will be several files that need to be deleted. If the wrong program is deleted accidentally, your computer could be ruined for good. There are several automated software's online that can detect and remove the search redirecting malware. There are a few good ones that are free, but the best will need to be bought at a relatively low cost. Pick whichever works best for you.

Why Are Android Phones Being Targeted By Malware Attackers

Computers, laptops and PC tablets are not the only devices that are targeted by malicious software developers but smartphones have now joined the list of the most threatened devices by intruders. There has been a steady rise on the number of attacks, which are targeted on smartphones and this means that people need to watch out for the malware. Android Malware Is on The Increase - What Does This Mean To Users?

Is the 'Printer' Virus Simply A Low Risk Malware or Is There More To It?

It was a fine Monday morning, but the office printers were not so fine! Printers started to behave erratically, spewing out pages with garbled text, till the paper ran out of stock. Soon the Internet buzzed with the news of a new printer virus, affecting businesses largely in the US, India, Europe, and South America. Even before analysts set themselves to their tasks, it was clear that this new virus is an innovation of yet another group of cyber criminals.

The creativity of malware writers seems to have touched new heights, with the discovery of 'Print Bomb'. Basically the printer bomb 'Trojan.Milicenso', is a new variant of an old Trojan, but the authors have modified it, just enough in its new avatar, causing it to discharge print outs by sending enormous print jobs to print servers.

The Trojan, once downloaded on the users' PC, drops a copy of executable 'Adware.Eorezo as.spl' file- Windows Printer Spool File- in the Windows printer spool directory. The spool directory includes copies of files that printers are supposed to print. It is to be noted that, even though there is a provision for users, to specify a custom spool directory, most PCs are configured by default to windows spool directory. Thus printers attached to computers, infected by this Trojan automatically print the contents of the .spl file, until the paper runs out.

On a quick analysis, it looks like a case of low risk malware that serves up advertisements by using resources and causing networks to slow down. But did it end there?

Delving a little deeper, it turned out that this Trojan 'Trojan.Milicenso', achieves its end by installing a "dropper executable", which creates a DLL file in the system folder. A DLL or dynamic link library is nothing but a group of programs. These programs could be commanded to perform communication with devices such as printers. In this case, the DLL was leveraged by the Trojan, to communicate with a printer. And the malware authors were careful enough to heavily encrypt the DLL file, making analysis hard; a proof, of increasing levels of professionalism, among cyber criminals.

Talking about, Adware.Eorezo, it redirects users to a French-language website, which is being lightly neglected, as a boon to paper salesmen. While this highly encrypted malware is being seen as red herring, in some quarters, that takes away the investigators attention from its lethality, and tries to fool experts into discarding it as low risk malware. And there are reasons that substantiate this line of thinking towards this 'still-to-be-understood' malware, which put in a nut shell, are:

- It is highly encrypted
- Uses multiple detection/check routines to disable detection and prevent analysis
- It exploits intimate details of OS
- It uses data files as executables

And while the limelight is still not off the printer virus episode, a new variant of the Trojan is already floating, modified further in the design of its executables, to avoid detection. The malware authors never seem to give up their ways. Hence, protection emerges as the only way out.

Deal With A Malware Infected Notebook

No matter what OS you are using, at any time, malware can still bring your notebook to its knees. The important thing, however, is not to stress out over spyware and malware while you're on the road. Read on for tips that will help you troubleshoot any problems you may encounter and keep your notebook running while you are away from the office.

THE RIGHT TOOLS

Most of us have some anti-spyware and antivirus software installed on our business notebooks; some of us have more than one loaded. But these programs aren't really going to be very helpful unless we update them frequently. Even the popular Spybot Search & Destroy needs updating to do its job properly. When a user notices a problem, a common first reaction is to run the anti-spyware and antivirus programs on his machine. That's a great idea, of course, but it's important that you update and install the most current version of the software before you run the program. Doing this can save you a bit of time and will help root out any new infections you may have picked up while surfing the Web. Although you can set most enterprise-level antivirus programs to update automatically, there are some programs that require manual updates before you start the lengthy scanning process. For example, when using Spybot Search & Destroy, all you have to do is click the Update icon on the left side of the screen to download the newest malware definitions. After you download the latest definitions and detection rules, click the Search For Problems icon and follow any prompts to complete the update.

THE BEST DEFENSE

One of the best ways to prevent your computer from being loaded down with malware is to never let the stuff in the door. Windows includes a basic firewall (it's activated by default), but added protection helps. You will want to check that Windows Firewall is up and running on your computer. To access the firewall in Windows Vista/7, click the Windows icon, select Control Panel, and then select Windows Firewall; in WinXP, click Start, Control Panel, and Windows Firewall. If the firewall is set to Off, simply select the radio button or link for On and click OK.

Now comes the step of adding another layer of protection. Search online and you'll find several free firewalls available that do a good job of protecting your computer from unwanted intrusions. A number of these programs, once installed, will prompt you to determine which programs are authorized to access the Internet. Then the programs will block the rest (or at least seek permission to allow a new program to access the Internet). Of course, the enterprise-level offerings include powerful firewalls, so if your company uses programs such those, make sure they're up and running before you leave for a business trip. You can also search the Web for the latest highly rated antivirus and personal firewall solutions, many of which have free versions available for download.

DON'T CLICK THAT

Automated spyware and antivirus tools are great, but they're no substitute for a little bit of vigilance on your part. Got an email from someone you don't know? Immediately trash it without opening it. Even if your email program automatically opens your new messages in a reading pane, it's a good idea never to download an unexpected attachment. Consider using an alternative email service provider (various Web-based options are available) that can give you an extra layer of protection by immediately scanning all incoming and outgoing attachments for virus threats. Also, no matter what the pop-ups tell you, don't click anything that jumps unsolicited onto your screen claiming to be able to fix a virus or spyware problem. These pop-ups are more often than not carriers of spyware and viruses in the guise of an actual message from your OS. A general rule of thumb is that if it opens in a browser window and you did not specifically point your browser toward it, don't click it. Just close the window and go about your business.

KNOW WHAT YOU'RE RUNNING

So, your system is armed to the teeth with regularly updated antivirus and anti-spyware utilities, but you're still having troubles? There are some simple fixes you can run in Windows to help you at least get around spyware problems. You can simply monitor and control the programs your computer is running at startup. To do this in WinXP, click Start, then Run, and then type msconfig into the window that appears. Click OK and then click the Startup tab. See anything with a blank entry? If something refuses to identify itself, it's a pretty good bet you don't need it to start up your machine. Deselect suspicious checkboxes (you can also streamline your computer's startup routine here, if you wish, by deselecting programs that automatically load that you rarely use). Click OK and restart when prompted. In Vista, open the Windows Defender program. Choose Tools and Software Explorer and then click Startup Programs from the Category menu. Your startup programs will display in the left pane. Simply click a program to highlight it and then click the Disable button. Alternatively, you can permanently terminate a program by clicking the Remove button. It's also a good idea to set a restore point when you know your computer is working well. That way, you can always restore your machine to a time when it was functioning properly. To create a restore point, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and System Restore. Click Create A Restore Point, and then follow the wizard that appears. To restore your machine, click Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time.

Must Know Tips on Removing Viruses and Malware From Your Computer Guide

3)Install some basic protection such as avast antivirus or avg. I recommend the site ninite for downloading these programs as it will install them together without any extra toolbars and bloat software.

combofix, rkill, tdss killer, kaspersky boot cd, and hijackthis.

Combofix: This is a a fantastic free program that can remove an infection, my favourite aspect of it is its ability to repair windows system files. This can be very useful and its fairly quick to run (less than half an hour).

rkill is a small program that disables fake antivirus alerts allowing you to remove them. It is becoming less effective as viruses evolve. Sometimes i run it multiple times b double clicking it repeatedly, this prevents as virus from shutting it down.

tdss killer: this small program was very useful in 2011 for removing a very nasty infection that hid itself in the master boot record (a place that antivirus software cannot usually scan).

Kaspersky boot CD: I cannot stress enough what an effective method of virus removal this is. Simply download an iso from the kaspersky website. burn it to cd using imgburn and boot the computer from cd. choose the graphical interface and run an update. run the scan and restart the computer.

Finally the best way to prevent viruses from taking hold is to continually update windows, java and flash. These features of a computer are typically used as a vector to virus infection. By keeping your computer updated, you can prevent most common infections.

How to Protect Your Computer From The DNSChanger Malware Infection

As of July 9th, 2012, the Internet Systems Consortium will be shutting down the rogue DNS servers utilized by the DNSChanger malware infection. During an FBI sting, agents brought down a hacker ring from Estonia last year under Operation Ghost Click. If your computer is one of the 1 million computers that were infected by the DNSChanger virus, you will lose internet access on July 9th, 2012. The reason you will lose access, is that your computer may be using one of the temporary DNS servers setup by the FBI to retain access to infected computers during the shut down of the surrogate DNS servers used for the hacker ring.

How to Tell Whether DNSChanger Has Infected Your Computer

The FBI has setup a website that will allow you to find out if your computer has been infected with the DNSChanger rootkit. By visiting dns-ok.us you will be able to check and see if your computer has been inected. While the website looks very cheap and almost fake, it is the correct website that was setup by the FBI. If you live outside of the US, you will need to check for alternative websites to check for an infection.

If you computer is infected by the DNSChanger virus, you will unfortunately lose internet access until you have had the malware removed from your computer.

What Do I Do if My Computer is Infected by DNSChanger

Once you've figured out that your computer has been infected by the DNSChanger virus, it's time to start figuring out how you'll get the rootkit removed from your computer. The first thing that you'll need to do is to create a backup of all of your critical files including your personal files, pictures, music and movies. After you've completed this, your safest bet is to completely format your computer's hard drive and perform a complete clean installation of your operating system.

Cybercrime is, more often than not, a business, and just like any other business, cyber criminals are out to make money, even if it is your money. It's no secret that financial malware is one of the most popular tactics of hackers. Nothing is more frustrating than fraudulent banking activity. If you have never been a victim of fraud, try to imagine your hard-earned money vanishing furiously from your account, unknowingly. The first thought upon discovery is denial: you start second guessing whether the transactions are yours, that is, until you see the location, which is probably from another state or country. The next thought is "How?" You are staring at your debit card in your hand, you have never misplaced your online banking login information, never given out your debit card number, and have always made sure to check that your website browser was secure (i.e. https) prior to an online transaction. Next comes the onslaught of excuses and the dreaded phone call to one of your banking representatives to explain that your money is gone, but you haven't spent it. And if you're one for immediate gratification, fraudulent banking will be a major headache, to say the least: you will have to volunteer to actively participate in the investigation, file reports, and answer questions before they can even begin the process of refunding your money. Financial malware is one of the worst categories out there. The amount of the attacks targeting the financial sector is growing irrepressibly. It seems logical that hackers would target major financial institutions; however, the bulk of malware aimed at the finance sector is en route for its customers, the obvious reason being that the average end user's system is probably less secure than the systems utilized by financial institutions. Here's some insight into how financial malware works, so that you can be on the lookout and alter your habits to prevent being the next victim:

1. Financial Malware Step 1: Hackers create banking Trojans, simply put, a program that may appear to be legitimate, but in fact does something malicious. Trojans are often used to gain backdoor access like remote control of a computer, for instance. The mastermind behind the scenes also creates what is termed his "Command and Control Center" in order to manage and control the spread of his new botnet (network of infected computers), issue new commands, and monitor progress. Cyber criminals are smart too. They automatically re-encode their distributed infections quicker than most anti-virus software can recognize and stop the spread.

2. Financial Malware Step 2: The next step is the most crucial: spreading the malware. Let's reiterate: cyber criminals are geniuses-they utilize crafty social engineering technology in order to trick users to install the malware, thus integrating the target operating system into their botnet and under the control of the cyber criminal. Ideally, the malware should not be spread too broadly; wider distribution increases the chances of discovery and insertion into antimalware vendors' signature-recognition files. The most popular form is spam emails (using any message, often appearing to come from a credible source or legitimate organization, to trick users into clicking a link or opening an attachment which downloads the Trojan onto the operating system), but there are several different strategies used, some as advanced as incorporating pop-ups on online banking websites and infecting the user once he simply mouses over the ad! There is an old saying in the security community: "Dancing monkeys beat security every time"... when presented something entertaining or potentially groundbreaking news, curiosity wins over caution.

3. Financial Malware Step 3: Once infected, attackers can obtain login information and other user credentials, but the main goal is to piggyback on active online banking sessions and initiate fraudulent transactions. Once user information is compromised, cyber criminals transfer money into different accounts they have access too. However, taking the money and running is not as simple as walking into the bank and performing withdrawal; banking institutions are too smart for that, and cyber criminals would not last very long. That's why they have several of what are called "mules" or middlemen, whose task it is to withdraw money and pass it on to the cyber criminal (probably naively, for compensation), obscuring the identity of the true thief.

People who truly value their money should never get complacent with its security. Part of the burden falls on financial institutions, as it will be increasingly important for banks worldwide to cooperate more closely in order to trace fraud through growing layers of mules. It is also the responsibility of software vendors to ensure that processes for software updates are fluent so that users are running the latest versions. But most importantly, end users should never wait until financial malware disaster strikes to seek protection. Security products should be installed and updated as quickly as possible. Outdated antivirus software has little value! Behavioral changes can also come in handy when it comes to preventing financial malware; this is a matter for which increased skepticism is actually okay. If at all possible, use an entirely different computer for online banking. Make sure your passwords are strong. Do not store login information where it may be accessible. Call financial institutions to verify the validity of dubious messages. Join the effort against financial malware. Force cyber criminals to make their own money, and not take yours, by investing in the protection of your finances.

Malware for Android

Botnets? You're welcome. Back in December 2010 the specialists reported on the establishment of a botnet out of Android-based devices malware Gemini, which was included in an entirely legitimate applications published in the Chinese shops. In particular, this malicious program has features that allow you to load in the infected device other applications and delete them, send the geographic coordinates of the device, generate a list of installed programs on your device and send them to a malicious server.

Backdoors? Even as. In March of 2012 has spread malware Android.Anzhu, which spread through Chinese websites with free software for Android. The program allows attackers to literally control the infected device remotely. Rootkits? Bootkits? Yes, virus writers are ready to take this step in the application to mobile systems. In particular, the Trojan injects itself into startup DKFBootKit system in such a way that is loaded before the initialization of the operating system. This program works only in "rutovannyh" systems, ie users enjoy indulging in the field of information security devices, but at the same time, has the ability built into the system partition and replace a few basic tools, and system services running in the background, as well as a startup script system. The program then waits for receipt of further instructions from the command-and-control server attacks.
